KNEWYU Interviews Jessica Whitaker

Social Media Director

It’s not every day that you come across a person who is 1. young and 2. has their dream job already! Jessica Whitaker is a 21 year old beautiful lady who has her dream job as a social media manager and non-serious photographer or hobbyist as I like to call it.

Jessica spoke to KNEWYU about her work, hobbies, and shared her tips for budding photographers whilst walking us through a day in her life.

Check out her interview with us below.

KNEWYU: WHAT’S YOUR NAME, WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHAT DO YOU DO?

JESSICA: My name is Jessica Whitaker, I’m from Seattle Washington and I’m a social media director.

WHY PHOTOGRAPHY, AND DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST PHOTO YOU TOOK?

I love photography as a creative outlet, I have always enjoyed it…..it’s something that has always stuck with me thru many different stages of life. I love creating an imaginary world where no one cares about grades, politics, etc…all it is is pretty people in pretty dresses with flowers.

YOU HAVE AN AWESOME YOUTUBE CHANNEL AS WELL AS PHOTOGRAPHY WEBSITE. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS ON CREATING A GREAT YOUTUBE CHANNEL, GROWING SUBSCRIBERS AND HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR VIDEO CONTENT WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY AND OTHER HOBBIES?

Thank you so much! My biggest tip is going to sound mad cliche but you really just need to be yourself! You hold so many different and unique aspects so play them up.

Balancing is honestly pretty simple. I take one weekend a month to pre-film and edit videos for the upcoming month. It’s pretty simple for me because I don’t take it too seriously, it’s just a fun outlet for me to help other creatives out on.

WALK US THROUGH A DAY IN YOUR LIFE.

My day starts at work! I get up at 7am, scrape the ice off my old Honda CRV and go to the office. I absolutely love my job! I have my own office with three huge windows and endless coffee. Then on my lunch break I go to the gym for an hour and return to work.

Work is always different everyday! Sometimes it’s producing videos for the company, sometimes it’s working with bloggers and throwing events. It’s always so much fun and I am so blessed by my job. I have my dream job and I’m only 21!

I usually get off of work at about 7 and head home. If I don’t have a pre-planned event (such as weekly Bible Study, etc.) then I usually go hang out with my beautiful and talented rescue pitfall Daisy or rabbit Pinecone and watch Netflix. I am really introverted so this is my favorite way to unwind. Currently I’m watching Stranger Things.

YOU ARE YOUNG AND HAVE YOUR OWN BUSINESS. THAT’S SO COOL AND INSPIRING SO CONGRATULATIONS! PLEASE WALK US THROUGH THE PROCESS FROM WHEN YOU DECIDED TO TAKE PHOTOGRAPHY SERIOUSLY, SETTING UP YOUR WEBSITE, PROMOTION, GETTING WORK AND PAID ETC.

I actually don’t have my own business! Many people think that I do, but I don’t do photography full time or even part time. I just love it so much and love to share it with the world! I don’t take photography very seriously. I just love the aspect of building a website and having it as a hub for me and my work.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF 3 YEARS FROM NOW?

In three years I see myself still traveling! I’m currently on vacation all around England with my friends. As far as living, I have no idea. There are so many cities I can picture myself living: New York, San Francisco, Paris, London. I have no idea!

WHAT TIPS CAN YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING PHOTOGRAPHERS?

My biggest tip would be to plug yourself into an encouraging community! I have a private Facebook group that I launched in October 2016 and I think it’s a great resource for anyone who is just getting started. Another tip would be to not compare yourself to anyone else…don’t compare your chapter 2 with someone’s chapter 12. Also!! Always step outside of your comfort zone. My goal for 2017 is to photograph mostly guys! I want to become more familiar and comfortable with posing guys.

Thanks Jessica!
