Fashion and Music Photographer
Bliss Katherine. The beautifully stunning photographer with the stunning name, and stunning photos.
I have been a fan of Bliss’s photos ever since I saw the photos she took of one of my favourite ladies, Stacy Dupree-King. I immediately went to her website and from then was hooked!
Photography is my second business after Knewyu (which I will introduce in a later blog post) so doing an interview with someone who has been doing it for a long time and who’s photography I admire is something I am very grateful for and excited to share with you all! Enjoy!
KNEWYU: WHAT’S YOUR NAME, WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
BLISS: My real name is Bliss, commonly mistaken for my middle name, Katherine. I’m from many places but currently call Dallas, Texas home. I’m a fashion + music photographer with a mad love for styling and mid century modern architecture.
K: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY? HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT BUILDING YOUR OWN BUILDING YOUR OWN BUSINESS/WORKING FREELANCE?
B: At age fourteen I had my first film camera my father gave me and haven’t stopped creating since. I lived in a small beach town so free time looked like taking photos of friends and palm trees. I loved fashion magazines as a teen and gained heavy inspiration from them which slowly led me to shooting clothing. I personally didn’t agree with the concept of college for myself, so I worked extra hard to prove to my family I could make it. By age sixteen my photographs were featured in magazines, on book covers, and in music album art which led to now.
K: DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS ON HOW TO GET CLIENTS?
B: Be yourself. Be kind. Be patient.
K: WHAT IS A NORMAL DAY LIKE IN THE LIFE OF BLISS?
B: Most days I sleep in and start each day with chai tea. I like simplicity, everyone thrives off of the imaginary because of social media. A few days a week I am shooting with models or brands and do most of my editing late at night, that’s when I feel most creative. As much as possible I’m traveling with my husband, isolated places are our favorite (laughs). Most of my shoots are on the west coast. I function my best in a small circle of loving, authentic friends all over the map. Talking about feelings, faith and design. It’s important to love your life and not take things so seriously. Every day I try to take it easy, eat lots of chocolate and have fun.
K: CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR WEDDING BTW! (EVEN THOUGH IT WAS A LONG TIME AGO.) WHAT IS IT LIKE BEING MARRIED TO A TALENTED MUSICIAN? I’M SURE THE CREATIVE VIBES JUST KEEP FLOWING…
B: Thank you very much! Jake inspires me daily. Listening to him play a new idea on guitar, sing The Beatles in the morning, design a beautiful picture from his mind or just talk to people with encouragement is life changing. We are always on the same page and it’s really special.
K: WHAT IS YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT AND WHAT DO YOU USE TO EDIT YOUR PHOTOS?
B: Canon for digital, Mamiya RZ67 + Canon AE-1 + a beat up Minolta 35mm
K: WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE PROJECT TO WORK ON SO FAR?
B: Getting to shoot brand campaigns / lookbooks are my favorite. I love being able to create a storyline, personality and attraction to a product through photographs. I don’t have a set favorite but traveling to beach or canyon locations are always great. My favorite will be when I’m shooting in Australia
K: WHAT TIPS CAN YOU GIVE TO AN ASPIRING PHOTOGRAPHER?
B: Don’t change your personal aesthetic to fit what the rest of the world is doing. Your voice is as important as your photographs, say what others need to hear even if it’s not cool. Stay away from comparison, it will endlessly drain your motivation. Be a world changer and above all, love.
Thank you so much Bliss!
