We spoke to singer/songwriter James Dey about his new album, ‘The Night Time’, how he got into music and what a typical day in his life looks like.
We are giving away his new album too so make sure to read to the end to see how you can enter!
KNEWYU: WHAT’S YOUR NAME, WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
JAMES: I’m James Dey, based in Leeds now and I’m a singer-songwriter – I’ve just released my second full length album called ‘the night-time’.
K: HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC? WAS IT SOMETHING YOU STUDIED? WAS IT SOMETHING YOU KNEW YOU WERE ALWAYS GOING TO DO?
J: I’m from a big family – I’ve got 4 brothers and we were all really encouraged into music when we were young. In the morning before school there was someone practicing an instrument in just about every room in the house! So it feels like music has always been in my blood somehow. I then studied music at Salford University where I really got into song writing and since then I’ve just developed a real love for recording and performing my own songs – eventually leading to this album release.
K: DO YOU HAVE ANY HOBBIES OUTSIDE OF MUSIC?
J: All sorts! I love the cinema, reading, bird watching, cricket – I’m something of a geek.
K: WALK US THROUGH A DAY IN YOUR LIFE. WHAT DOES A TYPICAL RECORDING SESSION LOOK LIKE?
J: Well unfortunately recording sessions are crowbarred into whatever bits of free time I get. I’ve got young children and all sorts of freelance teaching and workshop leading that I do most days, which I love. Often I then find an hour or two in the evening to go up to the shed at the back of the garden and work on some music. Much of that time is spent alone, just developing ideas on guitar, keyboard, drums. The solo way of working means it’s pretty slow, arrangements for the songs coming together over a period of months and years!
K: TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM, ‘THE NIGHT-TIME’. WHAT INSPIRED IT? WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
J: It’s an album of twelve songs about small moments, written over lots of years but somehow linked by this common theme of ‘the night-time’. This came as a bit of a surprise after a friend asked me what it was about – when I went away and thought about his question and re-read the lyrics I realised that many of the songs were set in that time where the evening becomes the night. Lyrically I like to focus in on a moment, a time or a place and try to express it, the feeling of it, in close detail.
K: WHAT DO YOU WANT LISTENERS TO TAKE AWAY FROM HEARING YOUR NEW PROJECT?
J: I hope that initially you feel drawn in by the warmth of it, the sounds and lyrics. Then I hope it becomes the kind of album that you slowly get to know and after a long time find that it’s like a familiar old friend that you’re pleased to spend some time with every now and again.
K: IF YOU COULD WORK WITH ANY PRODUCER/SINGER/SONGWRITER ETC. WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
J: That’s tricky! OK, producer – Dave Fridmann, singer – Feist.
K: WHAT TIPS CAN YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING SINGER/SONGWRITERS?
J: I think I’m the one needing the tips!!
