Laura Roy is a very colourful looking, colourful sounding and all round beautiful lady… oh, and singer/songwriter.
We spoke to her about her new EP, her favourite fashion tastes and a day in her life. Se also shared a few tips for those who want to be singers and/or songwriters.
KNEWYU: WHAT’S YOUR NAME, WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
LAURA: My name is Laura Roy. I am from Nova Scotia, Canada and I am a singer/songwriter, musician and artist.
K: YOU HAVE SUCH A BEAUTIFUL VOICE. HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT SINGING WAS FOR YOU AND WHEN DID YOU START?
L: I always loved singing from a very young age. I was around 11 when I first sang in public at a local talent show and I loved it. I started taking it more and more seriously from that point on. I never had vocal lessons until I studied music in college. It was always such a natural thing for me.
K: IF YOU COULD SING OR WRITE A SONG WITH THREE PEOPLE (DEAD OR ALIVE), WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
L: Hmmmm… On the top of my head, D’angelo, Raphael Saadiq and Pharell.
K: WALK US THROUGH A DAY IN YOUR LIFE.
L: Changes all the time! But ideally it involves listening to a lot of music, writing, playing guitar, answering emails, cooking (I love to cook), wine, maybe a show that evening.
K: YOUR NEW SELF TITLED EP IS VERY BRIGHT AND SUMMERY! TELL US ABOUT IT.
L: I’ve been working on the EP for last year and a half. It’s been a long time coming for me because I’ve done my best to be patient with the process and make sure the music represented myself and my experiences in a way musically that felt true to who I am as an artist right now. There are 6 songs on the project. It’s all very synth-pop and 90’s r&b influenced with catchy hooks and soulful melodies. The first 5 were written and recorded in Toronto with producers Adam King & Joel Stouffer (Dragonette) and the 6th song I wrote in NYC with writers Ari Leff & Michael Matosic.
K: WILL THERE BE AN ALBUM ON THE WAY? WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM IT?
L: Definitely more music to come! I plan to release another EP within the next year. Maybe a couple singles as well. People can always expect the same soulful vocal vibes but I want to explore some different production styles and potentially release some acoustic material as well.
K: DO YOU HAVE A GO-TO OUTFIT THAT YOU LIKE TO WEAR TO PERFORM> WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNERS?
I like to dress however I am feeling in the moment! I like to buy second hand or thrift clothes a lot or I like to make my own clothes to some degree. I am always bleaching things or cutting shirts up to make them my own.
K: WHAT TIPS CAN YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING SINGER/SONGWRITERS?
L: I would just say be confident in your creativity and perform live as much as possible.
