KNEWYU: HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY?
VANESSA: Picking up a camera & saying ‘Hey, I like this’.
K: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER PHOTOGRAPHERS AND WHAT TIPS CAN YOU GIVE TO ANYONE WANTING TO MAKE THEIR OWN MARK?
V: Honestly, there’s so many talented photographers that I try not to even compare. It’s easy to get lost in other’s work and feel like you’re not as good. Sometimes you gotta have tunnel vision and focus on your own work. Drive and creativity will get you where you want to be.
K: HOW DID YOU GET THE CLIENTS YOU WORK WITH? HOW DO YOU LIKE TO MARKET YOUR WORK TO GET YOUR PROJECTS?
V: Moving to New York & networking, networking, networking. Most of my clients are through connections I’ve made at events, through friends or other clients.
I like to be easy to work with and get the photographs to the client on time ALWAYS ~ they tell their friends & voila you have more projects to work on.
K: WHAT IS A NORMAL DAY LIKE IN THE LIFE OF VANESSA?

V: Checks Twitter, grabs a bacon, egg & cheese bagel from a bodega, puts on a good playlist (right now it’s a tropical electric vibe), pulls out a notebook and jots down cool photoshoot ideas, grabs a drink with friends, goes home, puts on moisturizer, starts over.

K: WHAT IS YOUR CAMERA EQUIPMENT AND HOW DO YOU EDIT YOUR PHOTOS?

V: I stick to a canon mark III for the most part but sometimes it’s too heavy, so I’ll swap it out for a lightweight polaroid camera.

I’ll usually throw all the images into photoshop and then adjust the saturation, I like to exaggerate the colors.

K: WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE PROJECT TO WORK ON TO DATE?

V: #SOILANDSOLE is my probably my favorite project. It’s an ongoing personal series where I photograph sneakers and plants. It stemmed from my fascination with mixing something masculine and feminine.

K: IF YOU COULD WORK WITH ANY PHOTOGRAPHER(S) OR MODEL(S) WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?

V: I’d love to photograph Ruth Bell or Bella Hadid, just look at them! My dream would be to watch/work with Mert & Marcus, they have an aesthetic that I really gravitate to, it’s overly saturated, playful and strange.

K: WHAT TIPS CAN YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING PHOTOGRAPHERS?

V: Carry extra batteries

Thanks Vanessa!!
