KNEWYU: WHAT’S YOUR NAME, WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHAT DO YOU DO?

LAURA: Hi, My name is Laura, I’m from a small city in the North West of England called Preston and to put it simply, I love to create.

K: HOW DID YOU GET INTO FASHION AND WHAT SPARKED THE IDEA OF YOU CREATING YOUR OWN STORE?

L: Ever since I was young I loved to sew and make toys and clothes for my toys. The older I got, the ont thing that didn’t chanfe was my love for sewing. I went on to do textiles at college and I’ve just graduated from my 4 year Fashion Design degree! My third year of uni was a placement year. I honestly would have loved to secure a paid placement, but God lead me to a place where just my travel expenses were covered. As I had no uni coursework to contend with, I needed a way to build the skills I wasn’t excerising on placement and I figured the way to do that was to open up my own Etsy store. I’ve been on Etsy for 2 years now and just in June I opened my own official store!

K: WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO START YOUR ONLINE STORE? WHAT TIPS CAN YOU GIVE THOSE WHO WANT TO DO THE SAME?

L: I started on a platform instead of from scratch. Etsy was the perfect platform for me to begin my business, there are other platforms out there like Shopify etc. and I would definitely recommend telling people to do research. Find competitors, find a mentor, ask questions, read blogs. There is so much information on the internet these days that all you have to do is ask!

K: WHAT IS A NORMAL DAY LIKE IN THE LIFE OF LAURA?

L: To put it simple – Wake, Pray, Slay. I’m always busy, people think that I have free time but honestly I love to be active. If I’m not sewing, I’m working on my website, if I’m not designing new items for my store, I’m out photographing current ones.

K: WALK US THROUGH YOUR DESIGN PROCESS. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?

L: If i’m honest I get my inspiration from everything and everyone. I couldn’t pinpoint it if I tried. I see things that spark ideas and I am inspired constantly by prints and bloggers and photographers. I love to play with shape and colour as well as texture, it makes design much more interesting.

K: WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE IN YOUR NEW COLLECTION?

L: The unexpected! I tend to make shapes into clothing rather than use conventional patterns as a block which I think gives my aesthetic a new edge.

K: YOU RECENTLY GRADUATED, CONGRATULATIONS! WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

L: Well I’m so glad to announce that I’ll be taking part in Africa Fashion Week London in September and I am looking to expand my shop. God willing I’d love to move to Manchester and get some more experience working there.

K: WHAT TIPS CAN YOU GIVE TO AN ASPIRING FASHION DESIGNER?

L: I would say stay true to yourself. It’s ok to make mistakes and those mistakes will shape your future.

Thanks so much Laura!
